Self-Reliance

“It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.”

In today’s society, people care what other people think of themselves. When people are put in a situation they don’t know how to handle, they usually do what other people say instead of doing what they believe is right. Though there are some people out there who are not like this, they have at some point done what the world’s opinion of the situation would be. As individuals, we should stop listening to what other people think and do things that makes us happy. Following the crowd is not the best way to live life. Be your own person and stand up for what you believe is right and if people disagree, then they disagree. Although some of the world’s opinion may be correct, not everything is. So deciding if one should follow the world or be themselves takes some self-evaulating. Every choice an individual makes is not always going to be right, but if a person does not follow the crowd then they can be successful in their own personal way.

  1. I agree completely. I feel as if people are losing their sense of individuality and conform easily without giving it a second thought. People are so afraid to stand up for what they believe in and this is a scary thought. Knowing a majority follows others opinions/beliefs even when they do not agree with them is terrifying. It can lead to disastrous outcomes. It is kind of like the whole “ignorance is bliss.” Many people may not know the facts, therefore, they follow those who are great persuaders/communicators. Even if they have their own beliefs, they may be convinced to change their beliefs. It happens all of the time.

Moreover, I agree with you when you say that we need to be our own person and the way to do this is through self-reflection.
